The Word

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” John 8:36

In a shopping mall a young boy was returning to his mother with the bucket of buttered popcorn he had been sent to purchase. Just as he reached his mother and other siblings, he slipped and spilled the entire contents of the bucket on the floor. He immediately received a loud verbal scolding for the entire area to hear. He apologized profusely while attempting to gather the popcorn into the bucket. His mother did not cease her loud condescension of her son, telling him how foolish and stupid he was even as he continued his repeated apologies.

I felt compassion for the young boy and suspected this was probably the context of his home life as his mother’s continuance seemed not one of temporary frustration, but constant shaming, belittling,  and unfair criticism.

How sad if in our failures God was unloving, unmerciful, and unforgiving. If he continued to remind us of our weak flesh and failures after we had repented and asked forgiveness. But, he does not! The cross of Christ, the redemptive completed work of grace is one finished!

Once we genuinely are released from the domain of darkness we are recipients of certain and divine liberation. If Jesus Christ has set us free, we are truly free.

A prisoner justly condemned to death yet freed and extended mercy, praises you Lord with joy unspeakable and an overflowing heart of gratefulness. Amen.

"and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. "
